12 Feb North Korean Cheerleaders Are Stirring Up Serious Controversy At The Olympic Games
North Korea has already stirred up a little bit of controversy at the Winter Olympic Games, but it may not be for the reasons you’re suspecting. It turns out the fuss is all about the North Korean cheerleading squad that have been shouting strange chants at many of the athletic competitions.
The cheerleaders seem to have boundless energy and are ever enthusiastic despite the North Korean athletes doing poorly so far in the games. For example, the country’s hockey team recently lost to Switzerland on Sunday in an embarrassing 8-0 match.
Yet, the cheerleaders didn’t seem to take notice of the brutal defeat and continued their chants, often with choreographed moves to accompany their words.
The Washington Post translated many of the chants for English speakers and revealed that the cheerleaders are simply shouting phrases like “Go team!” and “Go for it” and “Win! Victory!”. This is not much different than the English speaking standard of “Let’s go, team!”
The cheerleaders, dressed in their red coats and usually sitting in the stands, were much more covered up and reserved than most other countries’ cheerleaders.
What’s more is that it has been reported that they will face prison in North Korea if they make a mistake during any of their tightly choreographed routines.
