North Korea Deny Torture Allegations Regarding US Student Otto Warmbier

The already strained relations between the United States and North Korea – if the incessant enmity and provocation even constitutes a relationship at this point – have taken another turn for the worse in the wake of the untimely, tragic death of American student Otto Warmbier.

2017 has been dominated by bombastic, militarised rhetoric that many have feared will escalate into devastating war between the two countries.

Indeed, North Korea appears to be pressing on with missile tests that fly defiantly in the face of sanctions put in place by several countries and international bodies, and it would appear that the country has tested yet another new rocket in recent days, according to US officials.

Otto Warmbier sadly passed away in hospital on Monday, leading many to suspect that North Korea’s version of the events that led up to that tragedy might not be entirely accurate. The North had returned the 22-year-old student to the United States more than a week ago, on the basis that he had been in a coma for more than a year, and that they were acting on compassionate grounds, but his family have insisted that he was subjected to “awful torturous mistreatment.”

Now, in their first public response to Warmbier’s death, Pyongyang has denied allegations that they tortured the student.
