Newly-Single Lottery Winner Says His Ex Must Be Gutted After He Wins Massive Jackpot

Breakups are never easy. It doesn’t matter who ended it with who, if you’ve shared an intimate relationship with someone, life without them takes some getting used to. However, that blow won’t be too difficult to deal with for newly-single Paul Long, who just won the lottery.

On February 1st, his girlfriend of five years moved out of their shared home then he won £9.3 million on the British National Lottery last Saturday- that’s equivalent to $13.1 million dollars. Now the 55-year-old football fan has said that he might just treat her to dinner with his winnings.

“Let’s be honest, if I was with someone and you’ve just split up and they go and win £9 million on the lottery, you’re going to be gutted aren’t you?” Paul told the British newspaper The Daily Mirror. “You never know, I might take her for a holiday or a meal.”

Paul’s ex was contacted by another newspaper, The Daily Record, and asked if she was happy for him, to which she replied, “I suppose so.”

The 55-year-old bought the winning ticket after feeling lucky when his football team won a match, but obviously never expected to hit the jackpot.

“Leyton Orient had not won at home since Boxing Day, we won 3-0 and I thought, ‘This is brilliant’ – so I bought a random Lucky Dip online. I had £7.90 in my account so bought two lines,” he told the Mirror.

“I woke up the next morning and had an email that I thought said I’d won £9,000. I sent it to my mate and he said, ‘Not being funny but you’ve won £9 million’. All of a sudden my phone’s red-hot – everyone loves you.”

While Paul’s story might sound like the ultimate example of “winning” a breakup, he said that he and his ex split amicably in February. In fact, the pair were on such amicable terms at the time of Paul’s win that he was looking after his ex’s cat, and she was with him when he hit the jackpot.

“I was with her the day I won it. I went to see her on Saturday. We split up amicably,” he revealed to the Mirror. “She asked if I wanted to stay over on the way back from football on Saturday to look after the cat because she was away.”

“On Sunday, she came in when I was on the phone to Camelot.”

Paul plans to use his winnings to look after his children and maybe “upgrade to a better brand of tea bag.”
