26 Jun New York Governor Stops 9/11 ‘Hero’ from Being Deported
It’s a human trait to worship heroes: the brave men and women who display courage, integrity, compassion and willpower – those individuals who stand head and shoulders above the rest of society at large and do what needs to be done. It’s probably why comics books feature an abundance of caped fighters fighting crime, why so many people dream of becoming doctors or medics, and why we award veterans who have sacrificed life and limb fighting to defend our rights and freedom.
But hero-worship often comes at the cost of our judgement, and can leave us wishing for the impossible: for genuine, infallible saviours without the feet of clay that makes them every bit as capable of making mistakes as the rest of us.
Maybe this supreme admiration is the reason why it stings all the more when our heroes let us down, or when they are shown to be vulnerable. Just think of the furore in the wake of Lance Armstrong’s doping scandal for example. You don’t even need to have committed anywhere near as heinous a sin as he did.
The great and the good often find their lives undone by bad circumstances. But this week one of America’s bona fide heroes faced deportation to his native homeland of Columbia, but was saved by a hero himself, in the form of a prominent New York City governor.
