There are few things quite as terrifying as dating, so it’s apt that the latest trend to hit the world of romance is referred to as “being haunted”.

The spookiest thing about this trend is that it has probably happened to you without you even knowing. In true horror movie fashion, the realization sneaks up on you when you least expect it.

Of course, this isn’t the first dating term to be given a rather ghoulish name. We are all familiar with the “ghosting” phenomenon, whereby the person you’ve been seeing suddenly disappears and ignores all of your attempts to contact them.

The “haunted” trend is completely the opposite. Instead of fading away from your life, your ex-partner becomes ever-present. It could be nothing more than that they liked your latest Facebook profile picture, or that they followed you on Instagram, or maybe they personally responded to your Snapchat story. Suddenly you become haunted by the memory of them.

This process usually takes place several months to a year after the relationship ends, you know, just as you begin to see the light at the end of the dark tunnel that is a breakup.
