NASA Brilliantly Responds To Nine-Year-Old Boy Who Applied For ‘Planetary Protection Officer’ Job

Our fascination with space is deep rooted and unabating.

With that passion stoked by the silver screen of Hollywood, I defy any child to not have gazed up at the night sky, wondering what was out there, imagining perhaps, that one day you might explore it for yourself.

Possibly, part of our long love affair with space has something to do with the mysterious, seductive qualities of the unknown; so tantalisingly out of reach of most of us bar a select few astronauts, who hold hero-like status in our society.

Recently, that fascination has turned into something a little more profound. With scientists – not least the legendary theoretical physicist Stephen Hawking – warning that our days on planet Earth might well be numbered – Hawking estimates that human kind will need to exit Earth within the next 100 years – our explorations of space’s vast chasms have become more pertinent than ever before.

Indeed, as we take the first tentative steps toward colonising Mars, news of an other-worldly job opening has been spreading like wildfire in recent days, after it was announced that NASA was seeking a “Planetary Protection Officer” tasked with the prevention of “‘organic-constituent and biological contamination in human and robotic space exploration.”

A serious job, to be sure, and one which captured the imaginations of space-lovers all over the world, not least nine-year-old Jack Davis, who wrote an adorable letter to NASA expressing his interest in the role.
