The debate surrounding healthcare in America seems to have become distorted to such a level that it is difficult to grasp quite what anyone is hoping to achieve at this point.

Donald Trump won last year’s Presidential election largely on the promise of repealing several of his predecessor, Barack Obama’s, key achievements, perhaps most notably his signature policy, Obamacare.

Amongst various directives and executive orders that have often proved divisive, President Trump has attempted to replace Obamacare once already, but ran into trouble when the American Health Care Act was pulled from the floor before it could be voted down, as was largely anticipated, in the House, in what would have been a humiliation for the Trump administration.

Now, even as support appears to be waning for a new attempt at a healthcare act, it would appear that Republicans are closer to replacing Obamacare than ever before, and the President himself appears confident that the new bill will pass; “Health care is a very, very tough thing to get,” he told Fox News on Sunday, “But I think we’re going to get it. We don’t have too much of a choice because the alternative is the dead carcass of Obamacare.”

With all the politics at play, it is easy to forget the implications that decisions made behind closed doors in Washington hold for ordinary people.

One mother, though, seemed determined to highlight exactly what impact changes to healthcare legislation could have on her son, who has had multiple heart surgeries, and it makes for chastening reading.
