Message In A Bottle Is Finally Reunited With Its Owner, 29 Years After It Was Sent

People have been sending messages in bottles for hundreds of years. There’s something incredibly exciting about throwing a bottle into the ocean and not knowing if your message will ever get answered or where the tide will take it! That’s why messages in bottles appeal so much to children with their incredible imaginations.

When she was just eight years old in 1988, Miranda Moss Chavez wrote a message in a bottle and threw it into the ocean at Edisto Beach, South Carolina whilst she was on vacation. Now, thanks to social media, she’s finally got it back 29 years later.

Miranda’s message was found by Linda and David Humphries – who had been removing litter from Nanny Goat Beach on Sapelo Island, just off the coast of Georgia. The fact that it had survived for so long was nothing short of miraculous.

The message had been concealed inside a badly deteriorated plastic bottle that broke when David, pictured below, opened it up. It’s a good thing that it broke on the beach and not when it was still in the water!

The message – which was written on September 26, 1998 – read, “Hello, My Name is Miranda Dawn Moss. I am 8 years old. I am in third grade at Foster Park Union, S.C […] I came to Edisto Beach for a weekend…”

After finding Miranda’s message in a bottle, the couple immediately took to Facebook in an attempt to track down its owner.

“David made a remarkable discovery while we were doing a beach sweep on Sapelo Island this morning,” Linda wrote.

“He found this message in a bottle tossed from Edisto, South Carolina 29 years ago! We have a current name and city for the now 37-year-old sender, but any phone [numbers] we’ve found were dead ends. Will keep trying.”
