Meet The Women Of Thailand’s Giraffe Tribe Who Lengthen Their Necks By Wearing Brass Rings

If you are raised in a particular culture, it can be difficult to understand how or why things would be done differently on an entirely different corner of the globe. Especially if it’s a drastic difference borne out of a custom or tradition that you don’t understand.

That’s how I felt when I learnt about the women in the Kayan tribe in north west Thailand. They have been wearing brass rings around their necks for many generations, and it’s extraordinary to say the least.

Here are some of the moss impressive photos of the women in this one-of-a-kind tribe taken by Thai photographer Nuttuwut Jaroenchai who visited the tribe earlier this year.

Contrary to popular belief, the women who engage in this custom don’t have elongated necks. The brass rings simply create an illusion of an abnormally long neck.

Altogether the rings weigh an average of about 11 lbs. That would be an equivalent of attaching five bags of flour to your neck – ouch!

The woman in this next picture, is famed for being the first of her tribe to be referred to as ‘giraffe woman’. Despite being one of the oldest members of the Kayan tribe, she still wears over 20 brass rings on her neck!

The photographer, Nuttuwut Jaroenchai was very impressed by the tribe, even before he ventured down to their village to take the snaps.

“I decided I wanted to find out about them. My first impression when I saw them was that it was amazing and they look beautiful.”
