Massive Ancient City Ruins Discovered In Guatemalan Jungle Using New Technology

It’s not uncommon to see ancient step pyramids and other Mayan ruins scattered throughout Central America and Mexico, but recently a discovery of a new Mayan “megalopolis” has got archeologists very excited!

This new ancient city is bigger than famous sites such as Tikal, Holmul, and Witzna, which are known for their impressive temples and pyramids, and may be evidence that the Mayans were really much more complex and on par with other great civilizations such as ancient Greece or China.

This mega-city is being hailed as a “major breakthrough” and was found deep in the Guatemalan jungle. Archeologists used a new kind of technology to make the discovery called LiDAR, which stands for Light Detection And Ranging.

This technology allows for scientists to remove the tree canopy from aerial images of unpopulated landscapes, revealing ruins of ancient civilizations. Sensors bounce laser beams off the ground from drones to create 3D landscapes by penetrating through the dense jungle.

Through this process, archeologists have found that the Mayan civilization was much more complex and interconnected than previously believed.
