Her mental health has been scrutinized for a number of years, and now she has revealed that she has been fighting a secret battle with bipolar disorder for almost two decades after being diagnosed in 2001 – a time when she believed going public would harm her career.

In an explosive interview with People magazine, the 48-year-old singer opened up about her struggle with the illness, revealing that she was finally undergoing the treatment she needed to manage her condition, and, because of this, is now in a place to reveal the truth to her fans.

When she was initially diagnosed, mental illness was not as frequently talked about in the media, and, as a result, she kept her battle a secret.

The singer said that she sought proper treatment for her illness after what she described as some of the most difficult years of her life.

Those suffering from bipolar disorder have to contend with erratic changes in their mood, which can range from euphoric manic phases to phases of severe depression. Naturally, this can have a huge effect on their personal relationships, careers, and day-to-day lives.

“Until recently I lived in denial and isolation and in constant fear someone would expose me,” Carey told People magazine.

“It was too heavy a burden to carry and I simply couldn’t do that anymore. I sought and received treatment, I put positive people around me and I got back to doing what I love – writing songs and making music.”
