Man’s Indiana Jones Style Escape From Jail Caught On Camera

It is a frightening reality, yet a reality nonetheless, that sometimes people charged with committing crimes manage to escape jail. Without paying the price for their actions, any chance of redemption is nonexistent and they inevitably fall back into a life of crime.

On Monday morning, a man, later identified as 25-year-old Michael Maldonado, was captured on camera escaping police custody while being dropped off at Porter County Jail, and it’s safe to say that his escape looked like something out of an Indiana Jones movie.

Thankfully, Maldonado was recaptured by the Burns Harbor Police Department on Tuesday, according to Police Chief Mike Heckman.

Footage of his scape was captured on surveillance camera at the jail and it really has to be seen to be believed:

“Burns Harbor Police have successfully located and arrested Michael Maldonado. He is in custody,” a statement on the sheriff’s department’s website and Facebook page read. “Numerous agencies have been actively looking for Maldonado after he escaped custody from Portage Police yesterday morning. Thank you for everyone’s assistance and tips submitted in helping to locate him.”

The statement was confirmed by Porter County Sheriff’s Department spokeswoman Sgt. Jamie Erow.

According to a release from the sheriff’s office, the police took Maldonado to the Porter County Jail Monday morning after a traffic stop. He then managed to jump out of the officer’s vehicle and flee through the closing garage door.

About two hours after the escape, a Ford Focus was stolen from nearby Pratt Industries, it was then found at 3:37 pm in South Haven. Police believe Maldonado’s escape and the theft of the vehicle were related.

After his recapture, Maldonado was charged with unlawful possession of a syringe, possession of paraphernalia, driving while suspended and two counts of resisting law enforcement.

As Maldonado was found a day after his “great escape”, it’s a testament to the fact that even if you manage to flee the cops, crime really doesn’t pay!
