11 Jul ‘Man-Free’ Festivals Are Now Being Considered In Sweden After Increase In Sexual Assaults
Despite anti-sexual violence organisation, RAINN publishing statistics that show that sexual violence has fallen by more than half since 1993, it is evident that we still have a long way to go to ensure that women feel safe in all possible scenarios. The stigma attached to having an open dialogue about sexual assault is one of the first hurdles that society has to overcome in order for us to make substantial progress in this area.
Certainly, a worrying spike in the incidences of reported rape and sexual assault have led the organisers of Sweden’s largest music festival, Bravalla to cancel the 2018 instalment of the popular event. And in a move that is sure to be divisive, Swedish comedian, Emma Knyckare is replacing next year’s festival with an event that will be completely free from the male gender, by barring them altogether.
