There is nothing that can make your heart plummet quite as quickly as discovering that your wallet isn’t in your pocket or handbag. Even in this modern world where we are fortunate enough to rely on smartphones, we still depend on our wallet to hold our identification card, payment cards and cash.

However, in the past when smartphones weren’t even a figment of someone’s imagination, a wallet was an essential part of daily life. So much so that life without one was essentially impossible. With that in mind, it’s difficult to imagine how Clare McIntosh felt when he lost his wallet in 1944.

In 2016, Larry Sloane was renovating an old cinema in Nevada, Iowa, when he stumbled upon a plastic wallet trapped down the back of a wooden panel. Clearly a child’s wallet, Sloane didn’t expect to find anything inside. But when he peeled back the stiff plastic folds, he found multiple personal pieces that made him stop what he was doing immediately.

Inside was a pocket calendar from the year 1944, so Sloane knew that the wallet was in excess of 70-years-old. But that was all he could glean from its remarkable contents. That was until he found photographs and an identification card stuffed into one of the folds. It was then that Sloane knew he had a mystery on his hands which needed to be solved. Who was the Clare McIntosh? Was he even still alive? It was time to investigate!
