12 Jun Man Allegedly Copies ’13 Reasons Why’ Suicide and Leaves Behind Tapes
Netflix’s drama mystery series, 13 Reasons Why, was the wholly unexpected phenomenon of early 2017. People simply couldn’t stop talking about the hit teen drama, an adaptation of a bestselling young adult novel by Jay Asher, which saw Dylan Minnette star as high school student Clay Jensen, who receives a package in the mail containing seven cassette tapes.
The tapes have been recorded by his classmate, Hannah Baker, a girl who killed herself a few weeks prior, played by Katherine Langford. On the tapes are a series of 13 tapes, telling the listener about the 13 people Hannah believes drove her to take her own life. The worst part? Apparently, Clay is one of them.
The show divided the public beyond belief. Although the creators insisted the show’s dark theme and content brought awareness to an important issue and encouraged people to talk about their feelings, many viewers determined that the Netflix original was glamorizing suicide, and would eventually lead to people believing that it was the only way to be heard.
Although it’s still not certain whether the program was harmful to its viewers, reports allege that life may have imitated art when a 23-year-old Peruvian man killed himself, leaving behind audiotapes for the individuals he believes were responsible for his death.
