Though to some the glossy, airbrushed world of celebrity is the perfect illustration of how vapid our society has become, it has become undeniable, whether one agrees with the ramifications or not, that the notion of celebrity impacts poignantly on our lives.

Whether this is more a force for good or ill can be debated, but its truth should not be.

Celebrities command such profound influence in our society now that, far from merely being useful commodities to clothing companies wishing to make waves, it seems that we have come to rely on their magnetic pull to bring attention to some of society’s most sensitive and potentially devastating issues.

One need only examine the work that Selena Gomez and others have undertaken to raise awareness of mental illnesses, or Leonardo DiCaprio’s march to save our environment to validate the truth of that concept; though what this says about the failures of our governments in similar areas is damning.

Celebrities by and large, then, have accepted a responsibility to promote worthy causes, reminding us all that they are human in the process, rather than some unattainable paragon to which we might haplessly and senselessly aspire without any hope of replication.

Perrie Edwards, of Little Mix fame, has certainly warmed to that benevolent theme, after she posted photographs that reveal a scar that she has previously admitted to be her “biggest body hang-up”.
