It never seemed likely that Donald Trump’s Presidency would never have a dull moment. In fact, the former businessman’s distinct lack of affiliation with political norms has been cited by many as the chief reason for his triumph in last year’s election. He’s less a breath of fresh air from the political elite and more the proverbial bull in the china shop that’s shattered that coterie’s very foundations.

More cautious commentators would argue that an element of familiarity would be no bad thing in a political landscape lurching wildly from moment to moment. In Britain Theresa May’s espousal of a “strong and stable” dirge that became more ironic by the day, as her astonishingly inept campaign slowly unravelled. May proved that the values of her party are no longer deemed desirable by an increasingly disenfranchised electorate.

It doesn’t seem unfair to cast Donald Trump as the violent antithesis to such banality – for better or for worse – a bombastic tour-de-force whose emphatic adoption of the rallying cry “Make America Great Again!” resonated with his supporters … even if his actual ideas on how to achieve that concept were a little murkier.

A certain modicum of parody, then, might have been expected; Donald Trump is a larger than life character with a very distinct manner of speaking, now infamous gestures and endless soundbites for impressionists to fall back on. Now, though, a send-up of President Trump has come from an altogether unexpected source.
