The majority of us only use a very small amount of the cutting-edge technology that is on offer. Instead of experimenting with hover-boards and testing largely non-existent prototypes for flying cars, we choose to engage with our smartphones, and the social media apps that we use them for.

Social media platforms such as Facebook, Instagram and Twitter allow us to interact with friends and family, even if they are hundreds of miles away, and they also allow us to benefit from the community that the internet provides us with. Gone are the days when we had to actually travel to a library to gain knowledge on some esoteric matter or the other, we can now take advantage of the collective mind of the World Wide Web which seems to have the answer to everything.

However, the internet also has its downsides, and some of them can be pretty er, damning. We live in a world where the information we keep on the internet cannot exactly be said to be secure. Classified information is always at risk of being hacked, no matter how diligently we change our passwords. This only becomes darker when we factor in that women’s bodies are often used as collateral in many of these situations.

In 2014, a collection of around 500 private photos of numerous celebrities were leaked without their consent. The majority of the victims were women, and many of the images contained nudity. Affected celebrities included actresses Jennifer Lawrence and Mary Elizabeth Winstead as well as model Kate Upton. We have reason to believe that such a breach has occurred again as Kylie Jenner’s Snapchat was taken over last night, and the hackers who did so are now threatening to release her nude photos.
