26 Jun Kim Kardashian’s New Makeup Line Reportedly Rakes in $14 Million after Just One Day
Another day, another eight-figure salary for a Kardashian.
The OG of the exceedingly infamous crew, Kim, launched the very first product of her new makeup line, KKW Beauty, today – and the entire line sold out within a couple hours. The product is a Crème Contour and Highlight Kit that comes in four shades: light, medium, dark, and deep dark. The fact Kim chose a contour product to guide her first move in the makeup industry is not surprising, as the star basically invented contour (if not, she definitely brought it back from the dead land of old-time Hollywood movies).
Being made purchasable to the public at 9am, the medium shade sold out within 12 minutes, followed by the light shade, and finally the two dark shades. By 11:40am, it was all gone. Retailing for $48, that means that the line brought in a whopping $14 million for the former sex tape star. This means the people at Seed Beauty, both Kim and sister Kylie’s parent company, are probably popping bottles as you read this right now.
The success of this line, of course, does not come as a huge shock. In her collaboration with Kylie on her Crème Liquid Lipsticks, the line also sold out almost immediately, with the 30,000 units sold bringing in $13.5 million.
Kim told E!News that she received a lot of advice from her 19-year-old sister on the launch, but that their careers in the makeup industry will remain separate: “I’m working with the same manufacturer,” she said. “I’ve had a relationship with them for a while actually. But the lines, they’re totally separate. We don’t really talk to each other about what we’re doing and what our formulas are.”
Kim also discussed why the two makeup queens will remain separated: “A lot of my products, starting when we do our concealer, is going to have anti-aging components in it. So I’m definitely focusing on skin. We don’t have many of the same products. We really aren’t competing. I will say Kylie can do her makeup better than I can.”
The launch of her new line did not come without controversy, however. Many took issue with the photos used in the campaign ads promoting the contour kit, accusing Kim of using “blackface”. The shoot, which features a somewhat dark-skinned version of Kim than we may be used to seeing, was quickly defended by the star. Kim explained the shoot to the New York Times:
“I would obviously never want to offend anyone. I used an amazing photographer and a team of people. I was really tan when we shot the images, and it might be that the contrast was off. But I showed the image to many people, to many in the business. No one brought that to our attention. No one mentioned it. Of course, I have the utmost respect for why people might feel the way they did. But we made the necessary changes to that photo and the rest of the photos. We saw the problem, and we adapted and changed right away. Definitely I have learned from it.”
Clearly, the “scandal” of sorts didn’t affect the launch even remotely. Finally, the Kardashians get a win! Always root for the underdog, right? Most of us can barely afford the $48 for the kit itself, but hey, glad she had a good day.
