Jennifer Lawrence Candidly Opens Up About Her “Incredibly Violating” Nude Photograph Leak

In September 2014, Jennifer Lawrence’s world was turned upside down. Her privacy was seriously violated by hackers who leaked nude photographs of her and other famous women onto the controversial image-based website 4chan.

Now, the actress has finally opened up about the long-term effect this violation has had on her life.

The other victims of the hacking scandal were Selena Gomez, Rihanna, Kate Upton and Kim Kardashian. But the most high-profile of the hacks was definitely the then 24-year-old Jennifer Lawrence, who achieved worldwide fame in 2012 playing Katniss Everdeen in The Hunger Games.

Celebrities are no strangers to privacy invasions, but the Silver Linings Playbook actress was pretty shaken to find out that even photographs taken in the privacy of her own home were not safe from the prying eyes of the general public.

The ordeal was made more traumatic by the fact that many members of the public had no qualms about seeking out the leaked photographs.

As a celebrity, Lawrence has had no option but to succumb to the fact that she lives her life in the public eye, but even she thought that while she was firmly away from the outside world, she could relax and spend her free time as she pleased.

“When the hacking thing happened, it was so unbelievably violating that you can’t even put it into words,” she recalled.

Unfortunately, dozens of personal photographs from female celebrities’ iCloud accounts were leaked. When Lawrence heard the news of the invasive hacking from her security team, she and her publicist decided it was best to be open and honest about it all.

So Lawrence ultimately confirmed the authenticity of the photos.

“I think that I’m still actually processing it,” she said in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter‘s ‘Awards Chatter’ podcast.

“When I first found out it was happening, my security reached out to me. It was happening minute-to-minute – it was almost like a ransom situation where they were releasing new ones every hour or so.”

Unfortunately, upon hearing the news, many people went out of their way to view the leaked photographs and share them on other websites like Twitter and Facebook, disrespecting Lawrence’s right to privacy.

“I feel like I got gang-banged by the f***ing planet – like, there’s not one person in the world that is not capable of seeing these intimate photos of me,” she said.

In fact, many people were very open about viewing the photos for their own sexual gratification. In their minds, it was very easy to dismiss Lawrence as a celebrity who has chosen to live a life in the public eye, and therefore everyone had a right to her intimate photographs.

“You can just be at a barbecue and somebody can just pull them up on their phone,” she said. “That was a really impossible thing to process.”

At the time of the hack, Lawrence had been in a relationship with her X-Men costar Nicholas Hoult for four years. She felt motivated to send him nude photos because their respective careers had forced the pair into a long-distance relationship.

“A lot of women were affected, and a lot of them reached out to me about suing Apple or suing [others] – and none of that was going to really bring me peace, none of that was gonna bring my nude body back to me and Nic [Hoult], the person that they were intended for,” Lawrence said.

“It was not going to bring any of that back. So I wasn’t interested in suing everybody; I was just interested in healing.”

What the young actress found difficult to deal with was the pressure that she was under to uphold an impeccably wholesome image. After the whole debacle, she felt the need to repress her sexuality, or else she would be seen as a bad role model.

“I think, like, a year and a half ago, someone said something to me about how I was ‘a good role model for girls,’ and I had to go into the bathroom and sob because I felt like an imposter.”

“I felt like, ‘I can’t believe somebody still feels that way after what happened.’ It’s so many different things to process when you’ve been violated like that.”

What happened to Lawrence and the other victims of the 2014 celebrity iCloud leak is despicable and should never have been possible in the first place. However, Lawrence dealt with it in the maturest way possible, and we applaud her for her response.

If you are under any illusions that the iCloud leak was perfectly acceptable given that she’s a public figure, well the 27-year-old Oscar winner has some choice words for you. Take a look at this:

We wish Lawrence and all of those affected by hacking all the best in recovering from their ordeals.
