22 May It’s Been Ten Years since the ‘Charlie Bit My Finger’ Video and the Kids Look Very Different Now
It’s weird to think that internet memes can celebrate anniversaries. The nature of a meme is that it’s something of an immediate experience with a life cycle shorter than a mayfly’s. Most memes are created, shared, perpetuated and then forgotten about mere days later.
Yet there are some clips that everyone has seen and that are almost synonymous with internet humour. These videos attain such a spectacular appeal that they manage to exert their own cultural gravity, and are still celebrated for years afterwords.
If you want to talk viral videos, then it’s pretty much impossible to have any kind of discussion without mentioning Charlie Bit My Finger. It’s easy to understand why that simple 56 second clip managed to become, at one point, the most viewed video on YouTube. The super-cute clip of two tots playing with each other is now 10 years old. It was first uploaded by to YouTube by the father of the two kids (Howard Davies-Carr) so their grandfather living in the US could experience them growing up. Since then, it’s managed to accrue over 849 million views.
But after a decade, the two toddlers featured in the video, Harry and Charlie, have grown up considerably, and now that the clip is celebrating its tenth anniversary, the two boys have shared their feelings about their unwitting celebrity. If you squint hard, you can just about recognise them.
