10 May It’s 2018, And Monica Lewinsky And Bill Clinton Are Once Again Intertwined In Scandal
It’s hard to know who was more of a prominent figure in American politics in the ’90s: Bill Clinton or Monica Lewinsky?
They both certainly made some questionable choices whilst in the Oval Office. Equally, they both had their fair share of scandalous headlines in the press. Not only that, but they are both deemed responsible for changing politics as we know it.
The only difference is that one achieved this whilst serving as President of the United States of America and the other whilst working as a White House intern. You don’t need me to tell you which one is which.
The Monica Lewinsky scandal is possibly the most memorable moment of Bill Clinton’s presidency. Then 49-years-old, serving his second term as President of the United States, it seemed that Bill Clinton could do no wrong.
The Arkansas-born commander-in-chief was extremely popular with the people of America, despite several smear campaigns against him – including the 1993 ‘Troopergate’, which saw two Arkansas state troopers come forward to claim that they’d arranged sexual liaisons for Clinton when he was governor of Arkansas. A story which was later discredited as “bad journalism”.
But then, five years later Clinton’s name was yet again attributed to a sex scandal and this time there was no way to bury it. Monica Lewinsky, a 22-year-old White House intern was initially reluctant to tell her story, which had begun two years earlier in 1995.
