Incredible Secrets You Never Knew About The Playboy Mansion

Ever heard of 10236 Charing Cross Road, Los Angeles, California? If that address doesn’t ring a bell, you might recognise it by its other name. The Playboy Mansion is an enduring symbol of luxury, excess and fantasy. Frequently visited by celebrities, the mansion itself has bred famous faces in its own right, as it enshrined the late Playboy founder Hugh Hefner as the quintessential hedonist and birthed a steady stream of famous Playmates over the years.

The living arrangement in the mansion are also famous. Playmates living at the mansion were not just Hef’s employees, they were also his girlfriends. In spite of what you may have heard about this famous home, however, there are a few things you may not know about the mansion. Keep reading to find out even more shocking facts about this iconic residence.

1. It’s Not The Original

Before moving to his current home in Los Angeles, Hef’s California residence was initially known as Playboy Mansion West. The original mansion – a sprawling estate located at 1340 North State Parkway in Chicago’s Gold Coast – was built in 1899 and had around 70 rooms. It was notorious for having a brass plate outside its door which read “Si Non Oscillas, Noli Tintinndare” – Latin for “If you don’t swing, don’t ring”. Hef shuttled between both locations until he moved west permanently in 1974.

2. Hef Didn’t Own It At The Time Of His Death

Originally purchased by Playboy Enterprises in 1971, the Playboy Mansion was recently sold to Daren Metropoulos for $100million. Though only half of the original $200million asking price, the sale shows a marked jump in value from the original purchase which cost Hef’s company $1.07million. As part of the conditions of the sale, he would continue to rent the mansion from Metropoulos for the rest of his life.

3. Each Bathroom Has A “Special Tray”

The Playboy Mansion had quite a few quirky decorating touches, such as a special tray found in each bathroom. According to Holly Madison – the former “Number One Girlfriend” of Hef’s – each bathroom contained a “tray of Johnson’s Baby Oil, Vaseline, and Kleenex that was in every bathroom, in the grotto, and at the tennis courts and the pool bar”. A reporter who visited the mansion in 2013 also noted a large supply of tampons in the toilets. Baby oil, Vaseline, Kleenex and tons of tampons – what on earth were these bathrooms being stocked for?

4. Playmates Had A Curfew

British Playboy model Carla Howe who moved to LA to become a playmate with her sister recalls the strict deadline by which all playmates had to be back in the mansion:

“When you’re here you have to be in by the 9pm curfew. You’re not allowed to invite any friends up to see you. You’re definitely not allowed male visitors. If you break the rules you get banned. Once you’re out, you’re out, you can’t come back.”

Playmates received a $1,000 allowance every week, which served as “pocket money” since most other costs like living expenses, transport and so on were covered by the company.
