We have all been in the situation where we have unintentionally injured a child. Be it an innocent game of soccer that went wrong when you got a little too enthusiastic, or a family game of Monopoly which ended when you flipped the board and cut your little sister’s lip open.

Whilst it is almost always an accident, it never stops you from feeling an immense sense of guilt. So you can only imagine how Todd Fraizer felt when a foul ball he hit flew into the stand, only to stop when it came into contact with the face of a young girl.

The ball, which was traveling at a rapid 105 mph, flew at the child before she, or her parents, had a chance to react whilst the New York Yankees played the Minnesota Twins in September last year.

Immediately after it became clear to the players that the ball had hit a fan, they became somber and halted the match. Leaning on their bats, with their hats in their hands, it was clear that the incident had deeply affected each and every one of them.

The girl quickly received medical attention at the stadium before being taken to a nearby hospital where she was declared to be in a “stable” condition. Speaking to The New York Post, the girl’s father explained how his daughter’s recovery will “be a long process.”

Meanwhile, Fraizer has reached out to the family who are in no way angry about the incident. “[The girl’s father] told me not to stress over it, and to understand it’s nobody’s fault — that it is one of those freak accidents. The family is happy she is OK,” Fraizer said.

The incident was a stark reminder to stadium officials as to why safety nets are necessary. Off the back of this incident teams such as the Reds, Padres, Mariners and Rockies all vowed to extend their ballpark netting. Hopefully, more teams can follow suit in the future to ensure maximum safety for all fans.
