High School Student Facing Huge Backlash After Wearing “Inappropriate” Dress To Prom

In the last few years, there has been a massive rise in what is known as social justice activism. Such activism seeks to expose and reduce instances of unacceptable behavior towards minorities.

However, in spite of its good intentions, it has not been without its critics. Indeed, many social media users dedicate much of their time on the internet to arguing against these activists, mockingly branding them social justice warriors.

They typically argue that those who advocate social justice often dwell on petty and trivial issues as opposed to matters of any real substance.

For instance, the fact that cultural appropriation – whereby someone, typically a white person, wears something from a non-white culture – is widely spoken about in social justice circles has been criticised for being superficial and unnecessary.

Remember that viral video where a black student harassed a white student for wearing dreadlocks?

Now a more recent instance of cultural appropriation has emerged and many people on the internet were up in arms over it.

So what happened? Well, an 18-year-old high school student has found herself in the middle of a racially-fuelled controversy after turning up to prom in a traditional Chinese dress called the cheongsam.

The dress is usually made from silk, has a high collar and is mostly worn in East Asian countries.

Back in the 1920s, the cheongsam was chosen to be one of the national dresses of the Republic of China.

Even to this day, these often striking dresses are very popular amongst women, young and old.
