Henry Deutschendorf, the Ghostbusters Baby Actor, Dies Aged 29

Talking about the effects that mental illness can have on sufferers is something that is shied away from in the mainstream media. As it remains such a stigmatised topic, many people choose to stay quiet and fight a lonely battle. Not having an open dialogue about the effects of mental illness can prevent victims from seeking out the help they need and this is worsened by the fact that practices such as attending therapy and taking appropriate medication are also viewed as something to be ashamed of.

Statistics on mental illness in the US and UK are extremely worrying. According to the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), approximately one in five adults in the USA experience mental illness in a given year. In the UK this gap narrows to one in four people. As NAMI warns, individuals living with serious mental illnesses die, on average, 25 years earlier than the ordinary citizen. This is due to a medley of factors, but largely because those who battle mental illnesses face an increased risk of having chronic medical conditions.

This information is more pertinent than ever given the news that Henry “Hank” Deutschendorf has died at the age of 29 from suspected suicide.
