A decade may have passed since Heath Ledger’s tragic death, but the immense feeling of loss is still extremely potent for those captivated by his incredible talent. At the time, Ledger’s fame was in its infancy, having gained mass notoriety for his impressive performances in films such as 10 Things I Hate About You and Brokeback Mountain.

These standout performances attracted the attention of famed film director Christopher Nolan who unsuccessfully attempted to cast him as Batman in Batman Begins. Ledger rejected the role, which ultimately went to Christian Bale, but he would later relent to Nolan’s desperate attempts to cast him in the franchise by accepting the role of The Joker.

In order to play such an infamous character Ledger knew he needed to do things differently. It was this desire to do The Joker justice that saw Ledger lock himself in a hotel room for a month, working on his character’s posture, characteristics, and voice. During this time he also kept a diary where he documented the Joker’s thoughts and feelings.

This intense investment into his character would ultimately pay off when the film went on to generate over $1 billion at the box office, winning multiple awards in the process, including Ledger’s Best Supporting Actor win at the Academy Awards.

But whilst the world applauded Ledger’s eerily convincing performance, they also mourned the star whose lifeless body had been discovered in his Brooklyn home mere months before the film’s release.
