Not all heroes wear capes and drive transforming cars. Some heroes wear chinos and orange T-shirts. Some heroes drive SUVs. Some heroes live in China and stop 1,000 dogs from being slaughtered.

Eating man’s best friend might seem odd to a lot of people, but it is a practice that is fairly common in China. Despite repeated calls to end the slaughtering of the animal, the country has persisted with this tradition and the meat continues to be sold and consumed.

Eating dogs is particularly popular in the Guangdong province, where many of residents believe it has medicinal qualities. Dog meat is also consumed in other countries such as Indonesia, Korea, Mexico, the Philippines, Taiwan and Vietnam, but is illegal in most Western countries.

However, whilst many people still consume dogs in China, there is also a growing resistance to the trade. This was the case in Guangzhou, where upon seeing a lorry carrying 1,000 dogs packed in tiny wire cages, a local man pulled his car in front of the driver to put an end to the madness.
