As humans, we are inherently programmed to loathe at least one thing about our own body. Even the ‘perfect’ people of this world will have one element of themselves which they’ll wish to change. But for some, the desire to change their body is about more than just vanity.
Take Riley Byrne for example. The 21-year-old was born with the congenital deformity, pectus excavatum. The condition, which affects one in 1000 people, is caused by a deformity of the thoracic wall causing the sternum and ribcage to grow abnormally, making the chest appear to have a ‘dent’ in it.
Byrne, a young model from Australia, was born with the condition which deeply affected his self-confidence as a child. “Growing up I was completely depressed about my body and had zero confidence,” he explained in a video for his YouTube channel.
“I was always trying to hide my condition, putting my hands over my indented chest, doing everything I could to not let people see my body,” he explained. “As I grew into my teens I became extremely depressed about my body and used to be ridiculed by people who would point at my hole which made me miserable and ashamed.”
It was this feeling of self-consciousness which made Byrne take action to drastically change his body…
