I firmly believe that when you lose someone you love, it changes you forever. That despite the fact you learn to smile and laugh again, that feeling of loss never truly goes away. But despite the fact the death of a loved one is something we must all deal with at some point in our lives, losing your child is something no parent ever expects to have to go through.
As a teenager, Taylor Thyfault was an exceptional person. Like many young people, he compiled a list of 25 goals he wished to achieve in his life.
Those goals were:
- Join the Army and be the best that I can be
- Go bungee jumping
- Get married
- Start a family
- Buy an English Bull Dog and name him Diesel
- Swim with sharks
- Visit Hawaii
- Visit the tribe I am from (Saquangue Lakota Oyate)
- Save a life
- Coach a Lacrosse team
- Graduate high school
- Get a masters part-time in the military
- Get a job
- Buy my own truck
- Wrestle an alligator
- Meet the ‘Jackass’ crew
- Buy my Quad
- Play football for a minor league
- Go cliff diving
- Volunteer in the community
- Go to Alaska
- Be there for all of the people that have been there for me
- Never be arrested
- Go to Oktoberfest in Germany
- Be the best man, husband, son, soldier, and friend as … possible
It was evident that Taylor didn’t care about money or fame. He just wanted to serve his country, make a change and experience life to the fullest. And with the support of his loving mom, Carole Adler, anything was possible for this incredible young man.
By the time Taylor was 21 years old, he had already achieved goal number one on his list (join the army), and was he in the final stages of his cadet training with the Colorado State Patrol.
However, on May 23, 2015, Thyfault was sent to investigate a crash on Colorado Highway 66 near Weld County with Trooper Clinton Rushing. They had been warned of a high-speed police chase headed in their direction, and so they deployed stop sticks to attempt to halt the suspect.
Sadly, the driver missed the sticks and plowed into both officers.
Rushing was critically injured. Thyfault died at the scene.
Carole was left devastated. The mother and son had always been close, and after looking back at her cell phone messages, she realized their final text conversation was left incomplete.
