11 Feb Gay Olympians Are Perfectly Trolling Mike Pence (But He Kinda Deserves It)
The 2018 Winter Olympics have only just begun and already there is controversy, at least with the American team. It has to do with a rift between openly gay figure skater, Adam Rippon, and conservative Vice President, Mike Pence.
Rippon is the first openly gay American male athlete to compete at the winter games, and he has recently become a bit of a gay icon because of it. Rippon, as well as freestyle skier GusKenworthy, have both publically criticized Pence’s involvement in this year’s games.
Pence is leading the American team at the Olympics, which is a move some athletes are unhappy about. Rippon recently refused, for a second time, to meet with the Vice President, which is understandable considering Pence has been associated with conversion therapy and anti-gay views.
“You mean Mike Pence, the same Mike Pence that funded gay conversion therapy? I’m not buying it,” said Rippon about the selection of Mike Pence.
He added, “If it were before my event, I would absolutely not go out of my way to meet somebody who I felt has gone out of their way to not only show that they aren’t a friend of a gay person but that they think that they’re sick.”
