12 Jul Gangnam Style Is No Longer The Most Viewed Youtube Video
It has finally happened: Gangnam Style has lost its title as the most watched video on YouTube. Psy’s timeless classic reigned over the YouTube charts for five years until it lost its crown. Gangnam Style, which was the lead single off Psy’s sixth album, and was the biggest song on the planet when it came out in July 2012.
The music video, which featured Psy doing some pretty strange (but soon to be signature) dance moves, became an instant hit. It became the first video to rack up over 1 billion views on YouTube, as well as winning the Best Music Video award at the MTV Music Awards. The song brought in a wave of interest into the K-Pop scene, and launched Psy into a global superstar overnight.
The song, which will surely go down on record as one of the strangest tracks to ever exist, let alone achieve worldwide chart success, was once so popular that that it broke YouTube’s play counter, and the company had to rewrite the coding, which now allows a maximum of over nine quintillion (9,000,000,000,000,000,000) plays. I didn’t know that was even a number.
Such was Gangnam Style’s success, that by the end of 2012, politicians such as President Obama, David Cameron and Ban Ki-moon had all attempted the dance moves, with embarrassing results. Today, Gangnam Style’s current views stand at an astonishing 2,894,555,157, but it has now lost its crown as the most watched video on YouTube.
