04 Apr Footage Shows Female Protestor Struck Down By Sheriff’s Vehicle In Apparent Hit-And-Run

A 61-year-old protester named Wanda Cleveland was struck by a police vehicle at a Stephon Clark rally in Sacramento, California. The incident, which was caught on camera, has been described by witnesses as a hit-and-run.

Cleveland was hit in her right leg and taken to hospital where she was treated for injuries to the back of her head and elbow.

Protests broke out after the killing of 22-year-old Stephon Clark, an unarmed black man who was shot by police last month. These protests have escalated since autopsy reports indicated that Clark had been shot eight times, mostly in the back.

The value of human life was once again questioned by Cleveland who, from her hospital bed, said, “I want to know what he was thinking,” referencing the police officer who hit her with his vehicle. “Is my life not that important?”

Even in the heightened moments of the protest, had someone else hit another person with their car, surely they would have immediately been arrested. “This was a hit-and-run,” a witness explained. “Police have to be better than this.”

The Sacremento County Sheriff’s Department issued a statement, claiming the incident happened at “slow speeds” after the crowd was “yelling while pounding and kicking the vehicles’ exterior”. One vehicle did suffer dents, scratches, and a shattered window, but it was not related to the accident.

There was no explanation as to why the officer did not stop to ensure Cleveland was okay.
