The likelihood of being stuck by lightning in your lifetime is one in 3,000, which seems worryingly low. As in, if you went to a football game in a 30,000-seater stadium, statistically speaking, 10 people in there will have been hit by lightning. That is insane.

Getting struck by lightning is one of those things you see and hear about, but never think it will actually happen to you. When I imagine being hit by lightning, I imagine it being like in a cartoon, with my skin becoming translucent so you can see my skeleton shuddering underneath, but of course, the reality is totally different.

Two people who know exactly how horrific it is being hit by lighting are the father and son duo Christian and Gabe Neal. The pair were on a fishing trip together when both of them were stuck by lightning. They were thrown from their boat and left paralysed in the water, needing the help of a heroic war veteran to come and save them from drowning. Both the men believe it is a “miracle” that they survived, and have since come forward to show the injuries they sustained in the accident.
