The assassination of President Kennedy on November 22, 1963 has long been cemented in people’s minds as one of the greatest conspiracies of the twentieth century. It was a stark reminder that even the most powerful people in the world are not immune to murder.
A ten-month investigation by the Warren Commission found former marine Lee Harvey Oswald guilty of the assassination. However, conspiracy theorists have questioned its findings, claiming that a second gunman was involved and, potentially, the CIA.
For doubters of the Warren Commission findings, its claim that Oswald was able to act alone in murdering the president did not seem possible, nor did its claim that Jack Ruby acted alone in murdering Oswald two days after the assassination before he could be tried.
Now an ex-CIA recruit’s claim that he knows the truth about what happened that fateful day in 1963 could be confirmed. On October 21st, President Trump announced that he was going to release the final classified documents about the assassination to the public.
Antonio Veciana is not only a former CIA recruit but an anti-Castro insurgent. He claimed that Kennedy’s death was not the result of a lone gunman’s insanity. Instead, it was planned by the CIA who did not agree with Kennedy’s liberal policies.
The former CIA recruit was hired by the government in 1959 to assassinate Castro, and he was a founding member of the CIA-backed Alpha 66, which attempted to eradicate the communist regime from Cuba. This meant that he knew about the CIA’s most secretive operations.
According to Veciana, he saw a top CIA official named Maurice Bishop meet with Oswald at the Southland Centre in Dallas, something which led him to the conclusion that he had been recruited to assassinate the president on behalf of the agency.
The murder was reportedly arranged in August/September 1963.
Whilst this claim might sound like the lone ramblings of one man who is now well into his 80s, there is evidence to substantiate Veciana’s claim that Kennedy’s murder was planned by the CIA – including allegations that he was not the only one to have witnessed this meeting.
In 2014 and 2015, a man came forward claiming to have seen this meeting when he was just 15 years old. Wynne Johnson said that he and his girlfriend saw Veciana, Bishop and Oswald at the Southland Center in Dallas. His account is completely in line with Veciana’s.
What’s more is that the House Select Committee on Assassinations made Veciana testify that he had seen this meeting during its investigation of Kennedy’s assassination. In 1979, they determined that a conspiracy to murder the president was “probable”.
Veciana seemingly didn’t get away with admitting to witnessing this meeting either. He was the victim of a drive-by shooting in 1979, and it took place shortly after HSCA published their report contradicting the findings of the Warren Commission.
Kennedy’s reluctant support of the Bay of Pigs Invasion and his unwillingness to directly strike Cuba during the Missile Crisis reportedly sealed his fate in the eyes of the CIA. They also had a problem with his diplomatic relationship with USSR First Secretary Nikita Khrushchev.
As far as they were concerned, the only way to protect American interests during this tense time was to remove Kennedy from office.
Millions of pages of classified information about the assassination have already been made available to the public, but nothing has changed conspiracy theorists’ minds that the murder was anything other than one of the greatest coverups in American history.
After being privy to many a classified conversation, it’s hard not to believe that Veciana is telling the truth about what really happened. One thing’s for sure, the documents about to be released could put to bed one of the greatest mysteries of the last century.
However, the theory that President Kennedy was assassinated by the CIA is not the only one out there. Some conspiracy theorists have put forward a convincing argument that the president never died in the first place.
Regardless of whether or not you believe in any of these theories, unless the classified documents that President Trump releases contain significant pieces of never-before-seen information, the assassination will no doubt fascinate conspiracists for years to come.
