09 Jan Don’t Panic, But This Is Every Place In The World That North Korean Missiles Could Reach
I think by now we all know North Korea has nuclear weapons, that is no secret. The “hermit kingdom”, as it is often called, is ironically very public about their arsenal of weapons, but little else.
Since February, North Korea has flexed their figurative nuclear muscles on 15 intense occasions, just to give the rest of the world a glimpse of their strength. Of these nuclear tests, a majority have worryingly been successful.
Earlier this year, North Korea fired a missile over Japan in their most brazen launch yet. At this point tensions were running extremely high, prompting US President Donald J. Trump to threaten to “totally destroy” the controversial country.
Despite warnings from Trump and the requested intervention of the United Nations, North Korea’s Supreme Leader, Kim Jong-Un continues to taunt the world with his weapons.
Whilst many conspiracy theorists believe the weapons to be fake, constructed of nothing more than cardboard and clever Photoshop edits, the world isn’t so sure. Now, experts are claiming that the North Korean missiles could have the power to reach New York, and potentially even further.
North Korea is known to possess a large quantity of “scud missiles,” which can travel up to 1,000 kilometers, meaning that South Korea and Osaka, Japan are at risk of falling victim to their range.
Meanwhile, the entire area of Japan, as well as North East China, Eastern Mongolia, and South East Russia, are vulnerable to the medium-range ballistic missiles. These missiles have a range of 2,000 kilometers and are particularly successful if any of North Korea’s previous tests are anything to go by, with only two out of nine tests failing.
If that wasn’t enough, North Korea has also reportedly been trying to launch missiles from submarines. Currently, these missiles only have a range of 1,200 kilometers, but they could potentially extend to 2,800 kilometers, which ensnares the Pacific area. However, only three of the six tests carried out on these missiles have been successful.
North Korea also have access to intermediate-range ballistic missiles, which have the potential to reach 4,500 kilometers.
Hauntingly, it was one of these missiles used in the test which saw them breach Japanese territory earlier this year and almost provoke World War III. Under Kim Jong-Un’s regime, these missiles have been unpredictable with only three of 14 being successful. If further development sees these weapons become more trustworthy then they could reach Thailand and the US territory of Guam.
But, that isn’t all.
Their intercontinental missiles have a colossal 8,500-kilometer range, meaning that they could hit Greece, India, the Middle East, Germany, North East Italy, Scotland, most of Australia, the North of England, Western Canada and the Pacific North West of the US. North Korea has only been able to test two of these missiles this year, both of which were a success.
Recently, North Korea has been able to test a missile with a range of 10,000 kilometers, which could reach the whole of Australia, New Zealand, Egypt, Europe, Los Angeles, New York City and North West Mexico.
Then, the exhaustive list comes to an end with their space launch vehicles which could see missiles be sent into Earth’s orbit. Their range is a colossal 15,000 kilometers, which would put the whole planet at risk. Luckily, these have only been tested with light missiles and will unlikely ever reach their full potential.
But, for the full breakdown of potential doom, take a look at the image below and see if you’re in the safe zone:
