Donald Trump Warns North Korea Following the Death of Otto Warmbier

The already strained relations between the United States and North Korea – if the incessant enmity and provocation even constitutes a relationship at this point – have taken another turn for the worse in the wake of the untimely, tragic death of American student Otto Warmbier.

2017 has been dominated by bombastic, militarised rhetoric that many have feared will escalate into devastating war between the two countries. Propaganda videos have emanated from the North with regularity, along with continued missile tests that fly in the face of warnings from several countries and international bodies.

Pyongyang has shown something akin to a disdain for its American counterparts, displaying its defiance with vast military parades and provocative statements that would seem to suggest a distinct lack of fear over the possibility of conflict with the nation’s most potent nuclear force.

For his own part, President Trump had vowed to “deal” with North Korea, and expressed his hope in a Twitter post that China would yet prove effective in tempering the country’s military ambitions. Whether either will be effective remains to be seen, but the death of Otto Warmbier could prove a devastating blow in the already uneasy standoff between the United States and North Korea, as Donald Trump cast the North as a brutal regime in the wake of his passing.
