Dogs That Were To Be Electrocuted, Butchered And Made Into Soup Rescued From Meat Farm

While the majority of South Koreans don’t regularly eat dog meat, some of the country’s citizens, particularly the elderly, still feel strongly about their right to do so. Older citizens believe that it is beneficial for their health, and on the “Bok Nal” days (the three hottest days between July and August), they eat dog either as a soup or as a tonic called gaesoju.

Eating it in these forms, during this time of year, is believed by many to be a way to invigorate the blood and improve stamina during the hot weather. During the country’s Bok Nal season, over one million dogs are killed and eaten in this way.

However, the lives of over a hundred dogs held at one of these meat farms were saved when the Human Society International intervened this week. As part of a larger initiative to end the dog meat industry in South Korea, the organisation carried out a rescue operation to retrieve the animals, and 149 were saved.
