Dads are famed for being overprotective of their daughters. It’s now turned into a running joke online, with countless dads uploading videos of themselves telling their very young daughters that they can’t have boyfriends when they’re older.

However, this is a dangerous attitude for dads to have. Young girls get hurt. It’s an inevitable part of life, and instead of jokingly threatening boyfriends with dismemberment, they should be teaching their daughters how to look after themselves.

At its heart, this view is inherently sexist because it implies that women need to be protected by men.

Dads often worry about their daughters having relationships when they are young because they know that some young boys want to get physical, instead of having genuine relationships with them.
