Chinese Man Dresses As Passed Sister For 20 Years To Comfort Ill Mother

Respecting your parents and elders should really be a key value across the world. Yes, our mums and dads can be annoying (don’t get me started on grandparents), but you should love and cherish them while they are in your life, as they are the ones who brought you here. However, while many of us are guilty of not showing our parents the respect that they deserve often enough, the same cannot be said for one man in China.

Nowhere else in the world is respect for your elders more important than in China. Looking after those older than you is considered a key value of their society and culture, and is often the subject of debate across social media in the country. The concept of being respectful to your elders, or “filial piety” as the Chinese call it, goes back to 400 BC, and is a core value of Confucianism, with it being included in the early works of China’s most well known philosopher.

Filial piety was also one the main criteria for the selection of Chinese officials in the days of the Han Dynasty (from 206 BC to 220 AD), so has been a central value to the country for thousands of years. Due to the importance of filial piety in China, it’s no surprise that a video of a man who has been dressing up as a woman for 20 years “to help his mum cope with the death of his sister” is going viral.
