Charlie Gard Is Granted Permanent Residence In The US In Order To Receive Vital Treatment

Charlie Gard has been granted legal and permanent residence in the United States by Congress in order for the terminally ill 11-month-old to fly to America for treatment.

The latest move in the historic case was announced by US lawmakers who are determined to keep the youngster alive, despite British doctors claiming that it is “cruel” to let him live any longer. Jeff Fortenberry, Republican U.S. Representative for Nebraska, alerted the world to the news on social media, writing on Twitter: ‘We just passed amendment that grants permanent resident status to #CharlieGard and family so Charlie can get the medical treatment he needs.’

The new twist could mean that Charlie’s parents, Chris Gard and Connie Yates, could be able to take their son to America without needing the permission of British doctors.

Despite this, according to the MailOnline, some legal sources claim that Charlie is the subject of a High Court order and it makes little difference which passport he holds – he can still not leave the country.
