When I was a kid, my mom told me about the Donner Party as we drove through the Nevada Desert. They were a group of settlers who had become stranded on their way to California during heavy snowfall and resorted to cannibalism in order to survive.

Eating dead animals has never had much of an appeal to me since then, especially as humans have literally been served in a Sweeney Todd fashion in restaurants. But worst of all, there are people out there who genuinely like the taste of human flesh.

Cannibalism has been around for millennia, but instances of it are relatively rare in the modern world. That’s why news of a Russian family killing and eating thirty people over an 18-year period has sent shockwaves around the globe.

Dmitry and Natalia Bakshaev were arrested this week after police officers raided their home in Krasnodar, southern Russia. The family were exposed after a mobile phone was discovered containing photographs of a man posing with dead body parts.

The police’s nauseating find in the Bakshaev’s home is something straight out of a horror movie. Not only did they discover human remains pickled in jars, including the one pictured above, but a human head served on a tray of oranges.

34-year-old Dmitry and 42-year-old Natalia, a nurse, lived in the hostel of the Military Aviation Academy, which belongs to the Russian Defence Ministry. A witness said, “Each time we tried to enter their room, they started wild shouting and crying.”
