Several people, including a US Republican politician and an aide, are believed to have been shot at a baseball practice in Virginia.

Fox News has reported that the politician in question is House Majority Whip Steve Scalise, and subsequent reports have claimed that the politician was shot in the hip.

It is thought that police are investigating a “multiple shooting”, while the BBC says that a suspect is in custody.

In a tweet, police said they were “investigating multiple shooting 400 block E Monroe St. Suspect believed in custody,” while a presumed eyewitness claimed that gunfire could be heard emanating from the YMCA baseball fields.

The incident is believed to have occured during a congressional baseball team practice.
