28 Jul BREAKING: 11-Month-Old Charlie Gard Passes Away

The terminally-ill baby whose life has been the subject of an intense legal battle Charlie Gard has passed away, according to his parents Chris Gard and Connie Yates. The past few months have seen Charlie’s parents campaign passionately for their son to have experimental and potentially life-saving treatment. But on Thursday, High Court Judge Mr Justice Francis ruled that doctors could stop providing treatment for the baby as soon as he was moved from Great Ormond Street Hospital to another hospice.

It brings to an end five months of litigation, where Gard and Yates asked judges if Charlie, who has a rare genetic disorder, could be moved to the United States for a therapy trial. That request, however, was denied. Having failed in lobbying the European Court of Human Rights to intervene, Chris Gard and Connie Yates were also denied the opportunity to have Charlie spend his final moments at home. Charlie Gard was moved to a hospice yesterday, and has now passed away, shortly before his first birthday, which would have been on August 4. Our thoughts are with Charlie’s family at this difficult time.
