When I was a kid, my grandma always used to utilise that age old saying that told you to “take care of the pennies and the pounds will take care of themselves”.

Of course, telling this to a wide-eyed nineties child, keen to nab the latest Pokémon cards and new Spice Girls CD, I imagine it was pretty much like speaking to a brick wall, my head nodding, but my eyes glazed over, secretly assessing whether I was more a Baby Spice or a Sporty Spice at heart.

However, my seven-year-old self may have just been proved wrong this time. Rich Davies, a barber from the West Midlands, definitively proved that there should be little doubt of the veracity of my nan’s favourite phrase when he came up with an ingenious way to cut the costs of opening his new barbering business.

Rather than paying for an expensive floor to be put down, the 28-year-old and his staff decided to cover the Birmingham shop floor with 70,000 one pence coins. And the results were completely stunning.
