25 Jun Banksy’s True Identity Revealed As Singer of a Massive Band
Banksy’s identity has been an enduring mystery which has intrigued fans of his work since he appeared on the scene in the 1990s. Several people have been suggested as the true faces behind the anonymous street artist’s satirical murals. King Robbo, a graffiti artist, was a contender for a while when Banksy painted over his work on the Camden Canal. This sparked interest because, according to codes of conduct among graffiti artists, one can only paint over their own work. However, King Robbo soon responded and a feud of sorts ensued with each artist painting over the other’s work. Robbo passed away in 2014, thus ending speculation that he was Banksy. Another street artist Thierry Guetta, also known as Mr Brainwash, appeared in Banksy’s Oscar nominated documentary film Exit Through the Gift Shop. Opinions were divided regarding whether Mr Brainwash was part of a hoax or truly was Banksy.
Other observers believe Banksy is a collective, not an individual. In 2016, journalist Craig Williams carried out a five-month investigation in order to discover Banksy’s identity. He concluded that Banksy was a team of street artists, but found an interesting pattern. on at least six occasions, Banksy’s art popped up in cities where a particular band was playing. Banksy has also been known to list the band’s singer as an inspiration – further evidence of the link between Banksy and this set of musicians. Ultimately, Williams concluded that Banksy might not be an individual, but the team certainly had a leader. A recent podcast appears to have confirmed Williams’ conclusion, and has now got many talking about whether the mystery of who Banksy is has finally come to an end.
