Autistic Boy Is Banned From Attending His School Sports Day To ‘Avoid Causing A Scene’

Afflicting about one in 100 people living in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, there are 2.8 million people in the United Kingdom with an autistic family member. Having autism or living with someone who does can be a difficult task, especially at a young age, and around 63 percent of parents believe their autistic child is not at a school that can best support them. At a primary school in Liverpool, one parent is seriously reassessing how suitable his child’s school is for his needs.

Earlier this week at Banks Primary School in Garston, 28-year-old Mark Birchall was approached by a classroom support worker in the playground. There, he was asked to exclude his son Jacob, who is seven years old and has Asperger’s Syndrome, ahead of the school’s sports day, so he wouldn’t “cause a scene”.
