While tattoos were once the epitome of youthful rebellion and disregard for societal rules, today they have moved so far into the mainstream that they’re more of an accessory than an outright middle finger to the man.

That’s not to say that tattoos are meaningless, quite the contrary actually. What could give one memory, lyric, or image more meaning than having it drawn permanently onto your flesh, so that you encounter it every day for the rest of your life?

Of course, public opinion of tattoos varies greatly. Some people think they’re a lovely way to commemorate something you care about, while others opine that they’re inane and unappealing. Celebrity tattoos are subject to the highest level of scrutiny, of course, as the frequency with which they’re photographed means that they’re nearly impossible to hide.

Some of those who languish in the spotlight may even avoid getting tattoos for this particular reason, especially politicians or other non-creative celebrities for whom body decoration might be deemed inappropriate. This leaves us wondering… what would they look like if they did have tattoos?

Cheyenne Randall, 36, is a Seattle-based artist who attempts to answer that exact question. In one of his projects, he has digitally altered photos of famous actors, musicians, and other celebrities to make them appear to be covered in tattoos. In this “shopped tattoo series”, Randall gives these celebrities complete transformations, and the result is some images that you are very familiar with, but look extremely different than you remember.
