The days of attempting to create a romantic bond by finding those who love the same things as you are long gone. Today’s modern dating scene, in what feels like a dreary turn of events, has people finding more luck in their soulmate search by hunting down those who hate the same things they do. This may be an ode to the gloomy nature of the millennials, or it may just be a reflection of the horrid state of affairs we are experiencing in 2017. Either way, it appears to be working so well, that there is an entire dating app centered around the idea of mutual hatred.

The app, Hater, first has users swipe left or right on different topics, activities, people, and cultural items, based on how much they like or dislike it. Once they’ve stated their opinions enough times to accurately curate their tastes, the app then uses an algorithm to match them with other people who hate the same things.

Recently indulging in the curiosity of the American public, the app used data from their hundreds of thousands of users to create a map showing what people hate most in each state in the U.S., and the results are… interesting.
