10 Jul Andrew Garfield Claims He Is A Gay Man Right Now, But ‘Without The Physical Act’
Actor Andrew Garfield has come under fire across the internet recently for his comments on how he has prepared to play the role of a gay man. Currently starring in the London revival of Tony Kushner’s Angels in America, Garfield plays Prior Walter, a gay man living with AIDS in 1980s New York. In an NT Platform discussion of the show, Garfield said he prepared for his role by watching a lot of RuPaul’s Drag Race.
“Every Sunday I would have eight friends over and we would just watch Ru,” he said. “I mean every single series of RuPaul’s Drag Race. I mean every series. This is my life outside of this play.”
For those who don’t know, RuPaul’s Drag Race is a popular competition series in which host RuPaul searches for “America’s Next Drag Superstar”. The contestants, often gay men, compete in various challenges, including musical performances, design contests, comedic performances and acting.
Garfield’s comments only went further downhill after this, with the actor going on to say that he is “a gay man right now, just without the physical act – that’s all.” Perhaps reading the room’s confusion about that comment, he went on to clarify that he is not actually a gay man. Well, not yet?
